18. MISSING COMMAND INTERPRETOR:
Maybe the file Command.com is corrupted OR Infected by Virus OR Some one has Erased it.

19. SHOWING I/O ERROR:
a. The type of Hard Disk in CMOS may not be set properly.
b. Operating system used for formatting is not valid

20. SHOWING DIVIDE OVER- FLOW MESSAGE:
a. May some Directories or Files crash with other files.
b. Use CHKDSK/F or SCANDISK Command to correct it.

21. HARD DISK MAKING NOISE WHILE PROCESSING:
a. Unstabilized power supply.
b. Check for Loose Contact.
c. Do not use Y Connectors for Hard Disk.
d. It may create Bad Sector OR Weak Hard Disk.

22. HARD DISK HANGS WHILE PROCESSING: Check for Bad Sector by using CHKDSK or SCANDISK Command. If found format the Hard Disk and set Partition before that area.(This is the only procedure to use Hard Disk with Bad Sector) OR (To avoid Bad Sectors use Standard Power Supply)

23. HARD DISK NOT DETECTED:
a. Check Power Connector
b. Check Data Cables
c. Check Jumpers

24. PARTITION NOT SHOWN: Operating System where the Hard Disk formatted is not supported with present Mother Board. For Example: Hard Disk formatted with Pentium System will hide their partitions for 486 System.

25. MMX/DLL FILE MISSING: May the above files may be corrupted due to power failure or Virus. Make available above files from other Computer. OR Reinstall Windows 98 Operating System. (This procedure will not make any effect on existing Data).

26. WINDOWS REGISTRY ERROR: This will happen due to sudden ON/OFF of the system. Final solution is to Reinstall Operating System.

27. DISPLAY COLOUR DOES NOT MATCH
a. Configure Display Card properly with their CD.
b. The Standard setting for Windows is set it to 800x600 for better performance.

28. UNKNOWN DEVICE FOUND: May the Driver utility is not provided with operating system . Insert Driver CD and install software for the above Device..​

AAU TO RESUME SCHOOL ON THE 6TH JAN 2014

All students of Ambrose Alli University are hereby informed that academic session will resume on 6th January 2014.

Examinations are scheduled to begin by February 2014. The new session will commence from March 3rd 2014.

ASUU strike update: FG finally signs agreement with Union, classes to resume

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has finally signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Federal Government after it was confirmed that the disputed N200 billion expected to be paid into the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) account has been paid.

The FG had before now given the Union an ultimatum to resume classes by Monday, December 9, or lose their jobs. The lecturers, however, called the government’s bluff, daring it to hand them their sack letters.

Both parties have reportedly signed the MoU today in Abuja indicating that the strike would be called off sooner rather than later.

There are indications that the strike may be called off next week when ASUU is expected to present the MoU to its National Executive meeting, NEC.

UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN 2013/2014 ADMISSION CLEARANCE EXERCISE HAS STARTED

This is to inform all UTME and Direct Entry candidates, who have been offered provisional admission that the Admissions Clearance Exercise will commence on Monday, 9 December 2013 and end on Friday, 20 December 2013.

ASUU Strike Update - FG withdraws ultimatum

Following the outcry of Nigerians and substantial compliance by some members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Federal Government has withdrawn the ultimatum given to striking lecturers to resume in Universities or be sacked.

The Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, while speaking to journalists, displayed a letter, which was signed by the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Tunde Lemo and addressed to the Accountant General of the Federation. The letter confirmed that the total sum of two hundred billion Naira (N200 000 000 000) had been paid into a Revitalisation of Universities Infrastructure Account, as agreed in a meeting between ASUU and President Goodluck Jonathan on November 5, 2013.

Okupe noted that the federal government was interested in resolving the six-month old crisis in a peaceful manner for the overall interest of all concerned.

“Right now, the issue of ultimatum is not a matter for discussion anymore. There has been substantial compliance nationwide. If I say you must return to work on the 9th and 70% of the people that I am talking to have returned to work, that is substantial compliance,” he said.

ASUU Strike - NLC Makes Fresh Intervention

According to Mr. Chris Uyot, the Acting General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the union has began another move to intervene in the impasse between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government.

"The leadership of NLC has written a letter to the Presidency seeking leave to intervene in the crisis which is now in its sixth month.

"We have sent a letter to the presidency today, Dec. 9. We want to intervene in this matter.

"The turn of events is causing a lot of disaffection which can easily be resolved, that is if the government is willing to talk about it," Uyot said.

Uyot said that NLC President Abdulwahed Omar met with the leadership of ASUU in Abuja as a preliminary step to articulate their position before meeting with the Presidency when invited.

Asuu STRIKE UPDATE- ASUU meets to decide today

AS the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) meets today in Abuja, the issue of resumption from their five months-old strike will top the agenda of the meeting as expectations of Nigerians is to see the universities resume for lectures soonest.

The ASUU president, Comrade Nasir Isa Fagge’s demand that the Federal Government should show commitment of meeting the disbursement of N200 billion for the year 2013 allocation to the universities through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was said to have been met, according to the Senior Special Assistant to the President, Dr. Doyin Okupe, last week.

The Federal Government’s threat to disengage any lecturer that fails to resume lectures on December 4, earlier conveyed by the Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, has also been denied by President Goodluck Jonathan. With all these expected areas of conflict removed, many Nigerians are pleading with ASUU to suspend the strike and resume work.

Indeed, feelers after the burial of the former ASUU President, Professor Festus Iyayi, are that the consensus among majority of ASUU members are that the universities should resume for lectures against the backdrop of various consultations.

Daily Newswatch investigations indicated that expectations are high among students, parents and Nigerians that the universities will finally resume from its five-month-old strike at the end of today’s meeting. According to a member of ASUU, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the ASUU president will be addressing some select journalists in Abuja today on when to end the strike.

The threat by the Federal Government to sack lecturers that refuse to abide by the ultimatum fixed for today had done some incalculable damage to the relationship between ASUU and the government, especially the fairly smooth meetings between the lecturers and President Jonathan.

However, already there are indications that many universities will resume work latest first week of January owing to the Yuletide period.

Of course, some of the universities appeared to have heeded the government’s ultimatum to reopen for lectures. The reopening of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) brings to five the number of universities that have resumed. The other schools include University of Nigeria (UNN), Nsukka, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State; Enugu State University of Technology (ESUT), Enugu, and the Ibrahim Badamosi University, Lapai, in Niger State.

The authorities of the University of Ibadan have, however, announced plans to commence academic activities on January 6, 2014. A circular released by the management of the university stated that its actions were sequel to the directives of the Committee of Pro-chancellors (CPC) of federal universities.

The revised academic calendar for the remaining part of the Second Semester 2012/2013 shows that students are expected to arrive on Saturday and Sunday, January 4 and 5, while lectures will commence on January 6.

Teaching is expected to take place for 11 weeks, from Monday, January 6 to Friday, March 21, while revision will take place from March 24 to 28.

Students of the university will sit for their examinations from Monday, March 31 to Friday April 11. The senate of the university would meet on May 12 to consider the results of the graduating students.

Also, the authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, yesterday, December 8, directed the students to go back to class. According to a statement by the Public Relations Officer of OAU, Mr. Biodun Olarewaju, “the authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, have announced Sunday, 8th December, 2013, as the resumption date for the 2012/ 2013 rain semester.

“Accordingly, students of the university are expected to come into residence on the above date as lectures will commence immediately.”

The statement noted that lectures would commence immediately after the resumption. Students of the university narrowly escaped not completing their Harmattan Semester exams when the strike began on July 1.

It was gathered that the university was lagging behind with a semester compared to other Federal universities in the country.

At the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Lagos, Daily News watch investigations showed that many lecturers of the university have continued to mount pressure on the chapter’s ASUU to call off the strike.

The lecturers were said to have held a congress last week and a large percentage of them in the UNILAG voted for calling off of the strike and resuming work, especially over their inability to carry out research.

A lecturer who spoke with Daily News watch on the condition of anonymity said although the outcome of today’s meeting will confirm the resumption date, but he stressed that they hoped the strike would be called off before January.

However, candidates that were offered admission into the UNILAG have been going through screening and registration processes since two weeks, although the lecturers said the strike continues until they receive directives from the National Executive Council of ASUU after today’s meeting.

“Government owns the school, not us, so, we have to work with the decision of government. The decision of the owner (the Federal Government) supersedes that of any pressure groups in the school. By now, schools are working their calendars and adjusting them in preparation for resumption, so, one cannot just jump into the class and begin to teach,” the source said.

However, Daily News watch investigations showed that in schools where management had forced resumption, only partial academic activities were going. For instance, at Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Abakaliki, which management had pulled out of the nationwide strike since November 23, with an order that all academic activities on all the campuses of the university should resume on November 26, full academic work was yet to kick off.

The EBSU ASUU Chairman, Prof. Ndubuisi Idenyi, had promised a showdown with the management, should they try to force the lecturers to resume, reiterating that they were waiting for ASUU national body to call of the strike before they could comply.

The statement signed by the Registrar, Sam N. Egwu, Idenyi calling of the strike, stated that following the inability of Federal Government and ASUU to reach an agreement over the lingering strike, the university management had resolved to commence its academic activities.

But when contacted, Idenyi stated the ASUU chapter of EBSU dissociated itself from the purported reopening by the management and maintained that the strike was still in progress until they got directive from the national leadership.

Asked what would be their reaction if the school management decided to punish their members for refusing to resume work, Idenyi said they were ready for showdown with the school management if they dared them.

A similar scenario was the case at the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), with some lecturers of the institution complying with the directive by the management of the school to commence lectures.

Although lectures have not started fully in all the departments, a visit to the school campus showed that lectures had started in some of the faculties/departments, including Faculties of Arts and Education.

It was also gathered that timetables for lectures for the second semester of the 2012/2013 academic session had been released by each of the departments, to signal the commencement of academic exercise. Also, meetings of the heads of departments in each of the faculties were held to ensure proper course allocation among the lecturers.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Femi Mimiko, and principal officers of the institution went round the campus to monitor the level of compliance with the directive.

Speaking after the monitoring exercise, Professor Mimiko expressed satisfaction, saying the development showed that about 60 per cent of the academic staff were back on campus.

“I am satisfied with the level of response that we have received so far viz-a-viz the directive that management gave that lectures should resume today. I have personally gone round and I also sent my principal officers to go round the classrooms and it was discovered that quite a number of classes held.

“As we speak, lecturers are in the classrooms teaching; yes, the students are just coming back to campus, that is not unexpected, but the good thing there is, more than half of the total number of lecturers have indicated their desire to teach and they are all over the place teaching. I hope and believe that from tomorrow, the situation will improve,” he said.

Professor Mimiko said it was a matter of individual choice if a parent chose to listen to ASUU and kept his child at home, adding that there was little or nothing that could be done to that.

Also, students and lecturers of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), last week Monday, returned to school, following a directive by the school authorities.

Authorities of the university had directed the lecturers to resume classes on December 2 and commence preparations for the 2012/2013 second semester examination.

It was reported that at the Enugu and Agbani campuses of ESUT, students were in their various departments exchanging pleasantries and checking the notice boards.

At the faculties of engineering and management sciences on the Enugu campus, students in their numbers were copying the second semester examination timetables pasted on the notice boards.

The lecturers, on the other hand, held a meeting with the governing council of the university at the Agbani campus on the resumption of work.

Addressing the lecturers, Chairman of the council, Chief Chilo Offiah, appealed to them to sheathe their sword and return to classes in the interest of the students.

Offiah thanked the lecturers for attending the meeting and assured them that the council would do all it could to ensure the improvement of their welfare.

The executive members of the ESUT branch of the ASUU did not, however, attend the meeting.

It was, however, a different situation at the Enugu campus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), as only a few students and lecturers were on campus. Few lecturers were also found in their various offices, while the non-academic staff members were busy working.

Some of the lecturers said they were waiting for directives from both the school authorities and the ASUU branch.

A drama took place at the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) as the university’s senate announced the sack of all academic staff on its payroll with immediate effect for failure to return to classroom.

The sack order was made known by the Public Relations Officers (PRO) of the institution, Mr. Chike Ezenwa, while speaking in Owerri, through the telephone.

According to him, the senate of the university had declared all the positions of academic staff in the institution vacant, adding that they would be advertised soon.

The senate council, he explained, had already compiled the list of vacant positions in the school, adding that whoever was willing to resume would be adequately protected.

But the FUTO branch of ASUU has said any attempt to break their ranks would be strongly resisted. This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end o their meeting held last week and signed by both the Chairman and Secretary, Dr.Ikenna Nwachukwu and Dr F.M. Eke, respectively.

The communiqué urged members to ignore the resumption notice by FUTO management, adding that the branch would not engage in any academic activities until the Federal Government committed itself to implementing the ASUU-FGN agreement.

In another development, the authorities of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) have directed all academic staff to commence work with immediate effect, while the branch chairman of ASUU said the union would not succumb to threat and intimidation.

The authorities of the university, in a circular signed by the registrar/secretary to the council, Mr. JilliDandam, stated that all academic staff of the university shall return to their various departments, units and directorates and commence work immediately.

It added that daily compliance register would be kept by all heads of department for all academic staff, while it further directed every head of department to publish lecture time-table for all academic programmes by today.

However, the branch chairman of ASUU, Dr. Jangkam Wannang, said the union would not succumb to threat to call off its strike, adding that conditions to call off the strike were well spelt out. He said intimidation and harassment of any form would not force the union to call off the strike.

“We will not succumb to threat; the strike is for the improvement of the system. The threat and intimidation by both the government and governing council of a university will rather complicate the problem than addressing it,” he said.

Also lecturers at the Gombe State University are yet to resume classes, despite the directive to do so by the government. Branch Chairman of ASUU, Mallam Umar Adamu, confirmed that none of the lecturers of the university had resumed work. Adamu said the union would meet today to decide on the strike.

The premises of the university was, however, calm as security operatives were seen keeping vigilance at the main gate.

But the academic staff of Federal University in Kashere, also in Gombe State, did not join the strike.

But appeals to ASUU to end thje strike continue to mount as the National Parent-Teacher-Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN) has asked the striking teachers to see the extension of the resumption deadline as a sign of goodwill from the Federal Government.

The NAPTAN North Central Coordinator, Alhaji Danladi Aliyu, said the extension showed that the government was committed to ending the strike. Aliyu said, “I am pleading with both parties not to see this issue as a war that must be won or lost as both are working in the interest of moving the nation forward.

“ASUU should use this deadline extension to resume duties, while we also urge the Federal Government not to come down hard on them,” he said.

How to modify the idle or limit mode of bandwidth without doing any harm to Windows OS (operating system).
It's a normal trick by using Group Policy Editor or gpedit. Just follow the steps

1. Go to Start menu type Run and press your enter key

2.In run type gpedit.msc and hit enter or click ok. The Group Policy Editor window will open if you have the sufficient privilege on the computer.

ASUU STRIKE UPDATE DEC 2013

During the burial of former Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) President Festus Iyayi, members of the ASUU booed Rev. Fr. Andrew Obiyan who suggested that the months-long strike be called off.

“Do not give the federal government the privilege of satisfaction of fighting and defeating you. I encourage you to surrender first in this fight. You have made your point eloquently and clear enough,” he said, which was met by jeers, according to the Daily Post.

“Sincere and intelligent Nigerians will consider what you have done and will forever appreciate you for it. Your surrender at this time as a tool of power is the sign of strength, it’s not a sign of weakness,” Obiyan said, adding: “We may not trust the federal government owing to their antecedents, but I humbly request you to please trust them now.”

ASUU President Dr. Nasri Fagge said that the boos were simply what the crowd thought of ending the five-month-long strike.

Fagge said, “We were told here at this gathering that there were some fundamental issues that bother the mind of our late comrade, as to the future of the struggle. For me, it is left for us to rally round those ideals and advance his legacies. You saw the reaction of the crowd to what was said about suspending the struggle, and that to me said it all.”

The incident comes as Olabisi Onabanjo University said it would resume classes on Dec. 9, which was required by the Nigerian Federal Government, reported the Osun Defender.

The university called on students to complete their registrations.

The ASUU strike started in July after leaders of the union said the government failed to implement a deal to improve the welfare of teachers and upgrade state-run facilities, leaving hundreds of thousands of Nigerian students in limbo.

Bobboi Kaigama, the president of the Trade Union Congress, told the New Mail this week that the strike will be called off before the Dec. 9 deadline.

“We will mediate and call back both parties to the negotiation table,” he said, reported the New Mail. “The good thing is that they are both committed to ending the strike.”

He said the National Labor Congress is also participating in the negotiations between the government and the ASUU.

“Myself and my colleague from the NLC will ensure that this issue is quickly resolved. The most important thing is that both parties want a quick end to the strike. What is happening right now is as a result of a break in communication,” he said.

But Fagge said several days ago that the government has not deposited N200 billion in a bank account like what was requested.

“Why won’t government make available this money so that we know the money is there and the universities commence drawing from this money to address the problem of decay in infrastructure, teaching and research facilities? When that is done, our members will suspend the strike,” he said.

UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN HAS PULLED OUT OF THE ASUU STRIKE

The University of Ibadan has pulled out of the ASUU strike and has announced that academic activities would resume on the 4th of January, 2014.

This decision was announced by the Governing Council of the institution and was based on the directives of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Federal Universities and the National Universities Commission. However, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) said strike still on.

Mr. Olujimi Olukoyam, the registrar and secretary to the council at the UI, signed and released the official university bulletin on December 6, 2013, Friday. In the document the governing council explained that the re-opening became necessary in view of the consideration of all matters relating to the on-going ASUU strike, at its recent meeting.

“Consequent upon the directives of the CPC which directed the Vice-Chancellors to re-open universities for academic and allied activities to commence, the management on Tuesday, directed the deans and directors to open resumption register for academic staff willing to resume work to sign, on or before December 4, 2013.

“At its extra-ordinary meeting held on Wednesday, December 4, the school’s governing council deliberated on all the actions taken and ratified by the Committee of Provost, Deans and Directors and ratified them. The Senate at its special meeting held on December 4, also considered the revised academic calendar for the remaining part of the second semester of 2012/2013 session proposed by the Committee of Provost, Deans and Directors and approved,” the bulletin stated.

ASUU strike: FG should pay lectures salary arrears – NLC, TUC

The President of the Trade Union Congress, Mr. Boboi Kaigama and the Acting General Secretary of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Mr. Chris Uyot, yesterday called on the Federal Government to agree to the demands of protesting lecturers by paying their salary arrears from July to October, 2013.

The duo, in separate interviews with PUNCH said that the way forward was to attend to the lecturers’ demands.

According to Kaigama, the lecturers deserve to be paid their salaries, as going on strike does not mean that they were no longer entitled to their salaries.

His argument is that the Union went on strike because of the Federal Government’s inability to implement the 2009 agreement reached with the Universities lecturers.

He said, “It is okay, they are supposed to be paid their salaries; when one is on strike, it does not mean that he cannot be paid his or her salary.

“They went on strike because of an agreement that was negotiated which the government has not been able to fulfil. The government should pay them their salaries. The situation would have been different if they were the ones that reneged on the agreement.”

He said that the TUC and the NLC would back the Union to ensure the implementation of the last agreement as it was witnessed by him and the NLC President, Mr. Abdulwahed Omar.

“The NLC President Omar, and I are living witnesses to the final agreement that was reached between them and the government; we will support them based on what we witnessed, based on what they agreed with the government and the new implementation strategy.

“The TUC and the NLC will back them to ensure that the implementation strategy is followed. An aspect will be implemented this year and the first quarter of next year,” he added

Also speaking, the Acting General Secretary of NLC, Uyot said it was unlikely that the Federal Government would allow such a “minor issue” to derail its discussions with the Union, considering the fact that both parties wanted the issue of the lingering strike to be resolved.

“Well, given the spirit of the discussions between ASUU and government officials led by President Goodluck Jonathan, the issue of non-payment of salaries, we do not think, it’s something the government might consider because the spirit was such that both parties, particularly the government wanted resolved.

“So, we don’t think that a minute issue would derail the offer that the government has made.

“In any case, both parties were involved in the strike. The Union signed an agreement with the government which the government did not implement, so government cannot say that it was not part of the problem,”

FREE GOOGLE DRIVE TOOLS YOU'RE NOT USING

Though barely a year old, Google Drive is already a very popular service. It's easy to use if you already have a Google account, and its prices put Dropbox to shame. On Google Drive, 100GB costs a mere $5 a month (and Google even bumps up your Gmail storage to 25GB as a bonus). Dropbox charges double the price for 100GB.

But like Google's Chrome browser, Google Drive becomes even more useful when you take advantage of third-party add-ons and services.

These five totally free and easy-to-use tools will help you to encrypt your data, play your music, collaborate on slides, back up automatically, share files, and more. Some live on the desktop, some in Chrome, and some online, but all of them work to make Google Drive a happier online home for your data.

BoxCryptor

You may be too concerned about privacy and security to leave files lying around on a remote server. That's completely fair, but don't let it keep you from using the cloud. BoxCryptor is a Windows desktop app that creates an encrypted folder that you can place inside your Google Drive folder.

After you create the folder and assign a password, simply drag and drop the files you want protected into that folder. BoxCryptor instantly encrypts and protects them using the AES-256 encryption standard. To unlock the folder and view your files, simply run BoxCryptor, navigate to the encrypted folder, and enter your password.

If someone attempts to open the files without the password, an error message will appear. However, only the file's contents are hidden: The filename and file format are still in plain sight. So for a little extra privacy, change the filename to something innocuous.

Note that once you set the password for the encrypted folder, you can never retrieve or reset it. If you forget the password, the files inside the folder are lost forever. When creating a password, choose something complex but unforgettable.

DriveTunes

Cloud storage provides a very simple way of ensuring that your music is always there, wherever you have an Internet connection available. As of this writing, however, Google Drive does not provide a default music player. To hear your tunes you must rely on either portable music player applications or whatever is installed on the host computer. Chrome app DriveTunes provides another option.

If you use the Chrome browser (either the full installation or the portable version), you can install DriveTunes, which places a music player inside your Google Drive folder. It automatically detects all MP3 and M4A music files inside your Drive and lists them in an easy-to-view interface. Simply double-click a song to hear it.

DriveTunes is a basic player with just a play/pause button, a skip-track button, and a volume button. Don't expect anything fancy like album art, equalizers, or playlists. It plays your music and that's it.

The support of only two audio formats is a current limitation, but the DriveTunes download page claims that the next version will support Ogg and FLAC files.

Google Slides

As long as there are businesses, there will be slideshows. But what if you have to develop a presentation with a colleague who's located elsewhere? That's where the collaborative power of Google Drive comes into play, and Google's own Chrome app Google Slides makes collaborating on presentations as simple as your collaborators will let it be.

As Google's download page puts it, Slides is good for "shiny 6-pagers or 600 page snoozefests." In other words, there's no restriction as to the size of the file (as long as you have the necessary amount of space on Google Drive). You can create slide presentations with a variety of themes and rich animations. You can leave comments on the file for your colleagues--which is much more productive than engaging in endless email threads and tedious telephone conferences.

Best of all: You never have to hit a save button. Google Slides automatically and instantly saves everything you do in real time. Beat that, PowerPoint.

IFTTT

Sending files and backups to cloud storage is a great idea, but it's a chore we all too often forget or avoid. The free Web service IFTTT (which stands for If This Then That) aims to make the job easier, by automating all of these tasks in the background, so you don't have to think about it and do it yourself.

The service takes a bit of setup, but once that's done, you can sit back and let it do its work. IFTTT's Google Drive section is chock-full of automations (called recipes) made by other users. These recipes are freely available to copy and alter. If you can't find what you're looking for, and you can't tweak an existing recipe to suit your needs, then you can start your own recipe from scratch.

Suppose that you want every tweet you make to be stored in a CSV file in your Google account. First you fire up Twitter and give IFTTT permission to access your tweets. Then you tell IFTTT to send the tweet(s) to Google Drive (which will also have to give authorization to IFTTT). IFTTT's recipes cover most of the popular Web services. The developer adds new ones all the time, so it pays to check the IFTTT site frequently.

Open Drive

Many Google Drive users allow public access to their files, which means you can use Google Drive as one huge file-sharing network. But while you can request a copy of a handy-looking file, you first have to know it's there. That's the tricky part.

Ironically for a company whose core business centers on search, you cannot directly search for anyone else's files within Drive, nor can you look for them effectively by using regular Google search. Mcom Multicartes created the Chrome extension Open Drive to provide a search interface for these public files so that you can find them more easily.

What's more, using Open Drive, you can also simultaneously search other cloud-storage systems (such as Dropbox, Skydrive Evernote, and Box) and have those files sent to your Google Drive account. The more cloud services you search at once, the longer it takes. Once you get your results, you can download them, send them to your Google Drive, get a link to the document, or simply open what you find. If your search yields nothing useful, you can join Open Drive's Google Plus community to request what you need from other members.

As with any search engine results, there's some dross mixed in with the gold. That said, Open Drive found relevant files in most of my searches. And searching across so many cloud services at once in the same interface is addictively convenient.

There are all sorts of ways to supercharge your cloud storage and maximize your free cloud storage. As a devoted Google Drive user, however, I use these tools on a regular basis. They've got me covered when it comes to online file encryption, listening to music, searching for public files, automating my personal and professional life, and making snappy presentations.

10 CROSS-PLATFORM APPS FOR WORK AND PLAY

 
The Earth now houses more devices than people. That's simple math. Back in 2008 Gartner counted all the computers on our planet and got a number of 1 billion. Back then researchers also promised that by 2014 there would be 2 billion computers in use. Meanwhile, Cisco has predicted that mobile devices will outnumber people by the end of 2013 -- which means we'll be passing that milestone this year. Putting those figures together, you realize two things: There are already more computing devices than people, and the technocratic era is already in full play, while everyone's still waiting for it to come. And I haven't even brought in the statistics on robots yet.

Some people, because they are too young to use them, too old to care about them, or too poor to afford them, own no computers, no tablets and no smartphones. That can only mean that a lot of people own more than one device. You can take my word for that or head over to the nearest Starbucks, where you're sure to see someone reading on a Kindle, surfing the Web on a laptop and listening to music on a smartphone -- all at the same time. Of course, since you're reading this in Computerworld, you probably don't have to either take my word or drop by a Starbucks; there's a good chance you have more than one device yourself. Maybe it's the standard set of home PC/work PC/smartphone. Some people add a tablet or a laptop to this kit. But whatever set of hardware you have, each piece needs some software to enliven it. And that's where things get ugly. Because you have to remember how all of that software works on different platforms. And because if you create a file on your laptop and want to work with it on your Android phone, there's a possibility that the corresponding software won't be able even to open it. That's bad. I mean, that's really bad.

Does it have to be that way? No. In fact, more and more software developers are trying to provide a similar user experience across platforms. Mostly, such software accommodates arrangements like using a Windows PC at work, a Mac at home and an Android smartphone or tablet. Some also extends to the iOS used on iPhones and iPads. Here are several I have tried and recommend, to satisfy many basic and not-so-basic needs.

Business before pleasure, they say, so let me start with an application for office use. Kingsoft Office rates pretty well in what I call "cross-platformity," being available for Windows, Linux, iOS and Android. With the help of Kingsoft Office, you can create text documents (Kingsoft Writer), presentations (Kingsoft Presentation) and spreadsheets (Kingsoft Spreadsheets). The program is compatible with most common formats of Microsoft Office, like doc, dot, xls, rtf, txt, wps, etc. The application's interface is quite standardized, so you won't have any trouble with it no matter what OS you are used to.

Of course, one of the great tools for getting work done is the Internet. (Ironically, it's also a great tool for avoiding getting work done.) All devices come with a Web browser, but some people use those default browsers exactly once, to download their browser of choice. My favorites in the cross-platformity sweepstakes are Google Chrome and Firefox. They work on practically everything: Windows and Linux desktop, Macs and Android smartphones and tablets. Be aware, though, that the version of Chrome available for iOS is just a reskinned Safari and not the real deal.

Another indispensable work tool, which also has many uses for non-work activities, is B1 Free Archiver. B1 compresses files and thus saves space on your hard drive. That's very cool, especially if that drive is a small one on a smartphone. But this utility solves many other problems. I resort to B1 whenever I need to send several files via email or Skype -- the archiver packs them into one file so I don't have to attach all of them one by one. And with B1 Free Archiver, you can create password-encrypted archives and thus protect your private and sensitive data. The application is available on Windows, Linux, Mac and Android and also has an online version. It looks pretty alike on all platforms and at the same time adopts specific conventions and style of each of them.

We all have to open and read PDF documents now and then. There probably isn't any better way to do this than to equip your device with Adobe Reader. PDF documents are created with Adobe Acrobat, meaning Reader is a native utility. The software is available for Windows, Linux, Mac, iOS and Android. Its distinctive red-and-white interface is unlikely to be confused with anything else.

From PDFs, it's a short hop to images. A nice and absolutely free program called Fotor will help you to view and edit images stored on your computer or any other device. You can use Fotor on Windows, Mac OS X, iOS and Android. With Fotor, you can crop, rotate, resize, enhance colors and make collages. You can create collages and cards online as well, on Fotor.com.

All of what I've described so far is great, but after awhile, I need music. My preference is to party with two guitars, a drum set and a frontman, though I'll settle for a prosaic but decent music player. After rummaging great spaces of the Internet, I found one called Songbird. It works on Windows, Linux, Mac, iOS and Android. With Songbird, you can listen to music files of various formats, categorize them and create playlists. You can connect Songbird to your Facebook profile, and it will recommend artists, tell you about trending artists and more. You can also easily access your YouTube playlists and podcasts with the application.

When I want to sit back, relax and watch a movie, I need a video player. VLC Media Player is an open-source, cross-platform video player for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS. It plays video files from your computer, CDs, DVDs, VCDs and online streams and works with most popular video formats. In fact, you'll hardly find any audio/video file that VLC Media Player cannot open. It's a bright example of free but extremely high-quality software.

Now, let's say that a file you badly want to play is located on a torrent tracker. If you really want to get it, you will need a torrent client. Here the first prize goes to uTorrent, which works diligently on Windows, Mac and Linux. The program is really tiny and thus needs minimum system resources. With uTorrent, you can see and manage your downloads, for example, pausing them and resuming them later.

When it comes to keeping everything in order on your PC, tablet or smartphone, Evernote looks like a real find. This service helps you save snapshots from the Internet, photos and audio files; make notes; create to-do lists; organize collective work; and more. And the choice of OS/devices on which you can use Evernote is really amazing: Windows, Linux, MacOS, iOS and Android.

Dropbox rounds out our magnificent 10 list. This is software that can't do its job without being cross-platform. Dropbox is available for Windows, Linux, MacOS, Android, iOS, BlackBerry and Kindle Fire. And despite all the analogs that have appeared recently, Dropbox remains one of the most popular ways to synchronize information across devices and platforms. Dropbox not only syncs your files across all your devices but also saves them out on Dropbox.com. That means that if your computer suddenly blows up, you won't lose your information, since it is stored in the cloud. That, of course, raises concerns about privacy. To be on the safe side, you can use the aforementioned B1 Free Archiver and create a password-protected archive to store in the cloud.

During my ardent hunt for cross-platform apps, I've realized several things. First of all, a large portion of cross-platform software is free. I didn't intend to choose only free software; such a list formed naturally by itself. The second thing is that this software turned out to be of incredibly high quality. Indeed, we are seeing software business models shift from retail software and shareware toward freemium and subscription-for-extra-features. The third thing is the growing tendency toward cross-platformity - not all of these apps were cross-platform from the beginning. That suggests that we can expect more cross-platform goodies in the near future.

TABLET DEVICES AND EMPOWERMENT OF STUDENTS IN OSUN STATE

There is a not so quiet revolution playing out in the education sector in Osun State. The Opon Imo initiative is a unique and groundbreaking attempt at re-engineering how students learn at the senior secondary level, by making available to each one of them hand held digital tablets.

On each of the tablets are preloaded e-books on all subjects that are offered at secondary school level, video/audio lectures and tutoring notes, as well as a test platform for students’ self-assessment to monitor their own comprehension and mastery of the subject.

Opon Imo thus creates a virtual learning environment in which each student can immerse himself, preview topics ahead of class, revise after the class and assess his or her learning.

It literally places in the hands of each student a vast world of knowledge. It then beloves on each student to take full advantage of this learning opportunity for his or her success.

I have had the privilege of being involved with the project from inception by supplying the e-books pre loaded on the tablets, in my previous job as Managing Director of Evans Publishers.

I had gone to meet the governor shortly after assumption of office, accompanied by some members of my management team, to make a corporate presentation to him on how we could be involved with education in the state.

Some of the ideas we canvassed in our presentation, tallied with his own ideas, thus opening up what has now become a golden opportunity of being involved with one of the most exciting interventions in learning in Nigeria. I have maintained an interest in the project since then, even after moving on to another company, till date.

Officials of the Osun State Government have made statements about how much of a saving the project has meant for the state. I would like to dwell on some other advantages of e-learning, far more important than the financial savings to the state government, which the beneficiaries of this project in Osun will no doubt reap. As it is structured, Opon Imo ensures that each student has an e-textbook not only in all the subjects he/she is taking, but also on every subject offered at secondary level.

This in itself is revolutionary. Thus a science student, who has interest in Literature and does not offer it, can still dip into literature texts at his leisure. In the same way, an arts student can learn about scientific concepts that intrigue him, purely for knowledge’s sake.

The implications of this for knowledge availability, acquisition and spread are self-evident. There are also material loaded on the tablets for character development, civic and religious education. As Osun schools migrate from traditional learning environments to a more modern technology-rich learning space, what will be seen in no time is not merely a change in student enthusiasm for learning, but a significant shift in the enhancement of the learning experience for each student.

This shift will be manifested in a move from teacher-centered instruction to student-centered learning; a shift from single-sense stimulation to multi-sensory stimulation, single-path progression to multi-path progression, single media instruction to multimedia instruction, isolated work to collaborative work, information delivery to information exchange, passive learning to active/exploratory/inquiry-based learning, mere cramming of facts and knowledge to critical thinking and informed decision-making, reactive responses to proactive/planned action.

As a result, the total learning experience will be significantly improved, with positive implications for school attendance and ultimate learning outcomes.

Students will increasingly become independent, self-directed learners who are able to master higher-level critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaborative skills. The Opon Imo project is also unconsciously breeding a new generation of digitally literate young persons.

One of the observations made during one of the several project trial/testing sessions in Osogbo in 2012, was the ease with which students who had never before seen or handled a computer tablet took to them like fish to water.

Within a few hours they discovered capabilities the tablets had that were not even known to the technical people and had started performing operations they were only just being introduced to.

This resulting digital competence will no doubt encourage in many, a closer affinity for computing and what computers can do. It may even lead to some of the students developing interest that will take them along the direction of creating simple computer applications and solutions.

After all, this was how Amierican icons Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and many of the computer greats, started their careers. The digital affinity and skills they acquire now, will remain with them all their lives and careers. Consider also the ripple effects on the larger society when these tablets are taken home. In a similar pilot carried out in Ghana, there was significant impact on the parents who were mostly illiterates.

A new interest in literacy was noticed in many more parents. The consensus everywhere in the developing world where communal access to information technology has been facilitated for whatever purpose is that it does seem to produce some positive effects in the larger community beyond the immediate reasons for the deployment.

In fact, government can go a few steps further and preload information targeted at rural parents on the student’s tablets; thereby turning the students to change agents and purveyors of vital information and knowledge within their immediate and larger families.

Although parental involvement and other such home effects are often secondary, if not peripheral to the immediate goals of e-learning deployment, the effect of a more informed and aware citizenry cannot be totally discounted.

After all, what is the ultimate aim of government than to produce an enlightened and exposed citizenry? The idea of logging around heavy volumes of physical books is eliminated with the use of Opon Imo.  Students can now study anywhere, at any time.

With the tablet, he carry’s his entire library, plus other multi-media material, which accommodate the different learning styles: auditory, visual and kinesthetic styles, with him always.

With each lesson in the student’s hands in the form of videos and tutoring notes, a student has an opportunity to preview a class before the teacher presents it. He is therefore able to check the material ahead and gather some background to the topic. This no doubt will aid learning.

It also gives the teacher an opportunity to flip the class. The flipped classroom is a new method in 21st century learning, popularized in the United States. It is basically inverting the traditional teaching model by moving what is normally done in class to be done at home independently at the student’s own pace via video lessons.

The issue of the teacher going too fast for slow learners or too slow for fast learners, becomes a thing of the past. The time in classroom is then devoted to an overview, collaborative discussions, clarifications, concept management and reinforcement activities under the guidance of the teacher.

The flipped classroom in essence, is really about changing the instructional model, so that teachers can devote more time to giving their students deeper instructional support in the classroom. The flipped classroom has been used in many countries of the developed world with some amazing results. A particular school district in Ohio, which was recording 50 per cent and 44 per cent failure in English and Mathematics respectively, was able to ‘flip’ the fail rate at the end of one year, down to 19 per cent and 13 per cent respectively.

In addition, it was found that students engaged more positively, had lower levels of frustration because the task of doing homework alone, which was the major source of student frustration had been removed and a lot of what would have been done as home work was being done collaboratively in class as exercises.

Students learnt at their own pace, repeating material to reinforce learning, or delving into additional material to enrich what they have learnt. Students and teachers are not the only people who can potentially benefit from e-learning.

Principals and school leaders will find that they are better equipped to provide more effective instructional leadership and management as a result of better visibility into students’ progress and work products.

Assessments and test results are obtained faster, which enables the principals to recommend and implement remedial measures for students who are weak in certain subjects before it becomes too late However, a digital learning environment should never be mistaken for a silver bullet or magic wand that solves all educational delivery problems.

Like every other type of intervention, it requires a high level of management and administrative coordination for it to yield the desired results.

Scheduled and trouble shooting maintenance of the hardware for example must be managed so well, as to eliminate the amount of time a student has to do without his tablet or at least reduce this to the barest minimum. A replacement policy will also be needed for malfunction and total breakdown.

These are complex logistical operations that may need to be contracted to an independent organization or at least a management unit be created for it. The state government has taken the position that Internet access will constitute a distraction to students and so; the tablets are not Internet enabled.

While there is some wisdom in this thinking, it seems to me a bit of a disadvantage that the students will not be able to experience the vast world of knowledge that is found on the Internet. I do hope in the future this restriction can be reversed. It is quite possible these days with classroom management software, to curate and limit the sites that a student can visit to predetermined sites.

This allows them to have access to a greater store of useful study material while avoiding the distracting and downright negative ones. Allowing students access to the Internet can also facilitate collaborative learning across borders, within moderated student forums and discussion groups.

Thus a student in a remote rural community for example, can join a curated study forum with other students from different parts of the world and share the benefits of each other’s expertise online. To facilitate a deeper positive impact of the project, government must also invest quickly in massive teacher re-training.

E-learning has a specific and distinct pedagogy of its own. This is a special method of enquiry and discovery, very different from the ‘sage on a stage’ traditional teaching method. An effective and sustainable method of disseminating these skills to teachers must be deployed in fairly intensive training sessions, so that teachers become skilled and comfortable using digital resources to enhance teaching and learning.

To achieve this, government must invest not only in professional teacher retraining and reorientation, but also in development of more curriculum resources for teachers’ use as well. Investment in digital hardware must always go hand in hand with teacher training and orientation.

These two areas of investment reinforce each other and increase the chances and rate of return on either type of investment: teacher and curriculum resources development help teachers to more effectively use technology to transform teaching and learning, while adequate provision of technology hardware enables the retrained teachers to apply what they have learnt.

It will certainly be interesting in the near future to observe the anticipated positive impact outlined earlier that this project would have on learning outcomes in the State of Osun.

As the managing director of a company committed to the propagation of e-learning in our schools, I have more than a passing interest in this and will remain close to the project. I have no doubt that e-learning will be greatly popularized in Nigerian schools as a result of this pioneering effort.

In fact, I have a prediction that an electronic learning platform that leverages on telecommunications infrastructure will be one of the fastest growing developments in Nigerian education, over the next five years. E-learning remains the most viable means by which every Nigerian child can have access to the same high quality education weather they live in cosmopolitan Lagos or the most backward rural corners of Nigeria.

Our young people deserve an education that prepares them to thrive in a world of rapid change and increasing globalization. They need to be exposed to skills that will enable them to learn, work and live happily and effectively in the 21st Century. The government of the State of Osun has taken a giant step towards this. I have no doubt other states and private schools will follow suit.
